Brennan forebears - Calvary Cemetery Section 26 Lot 482

Betty Jane Brennan (nee Sum - Aunt Betty Jane). First wife of Thomas G Brennan, Jr. Mother of Terrence, Victoria, Christopher, Thomas G III, and Carol.

Following info courtesy of email from Aaron Nauman, Betty Jane's grandson:

Betty Jane passed away in 2011 and can be found at section 26 lot 0482.  Her burial date was May 7 at the age of 86.  There are 11 family members buried in this lot including her parents (Sum) and sister (McGovern) as well as their grandparents I believe (Coghill).

The Coghill gravesite is in the second row of gravesites from the street. However, the plot’s position is perpendicular to the street, while the first row of gravesites are parallel. Look for the cross-shaped Coghill memorial just behind the rectangular memorial for Tiernan, which faces the street directly (see photo).

Margaret Brennan (nee Wesling - Aunty Peggy) , wife of John (Uncle Jack) Brennan, mother of Barbara, Margaret (Missey), Timothy, Patricia, Michael, John (Jack), Martin, Mary, Anne, and Matthew.

Matthew Brennan - son of Jack and Peggy Brennan, husband of Lucy Brennan (nee Pigue).

The Maher/Wesling/Brennan lot will eventually include a marker with the last names of all who rest there.  I  was also surprised when the Calvary official told me that there was room for an additional 6 caskets and 17 cremated urns for descendants of John Maher, mother’s maternal grandfather.   I also learned  that after so many years, and for burials that were in wooden caskets, the remains have “returned to the earth”. Therefore, these graves can be reopened. The same earth is then returned, so it is not considered to be a desecration.  Such a circle of life it is, isn’t it?

The plot is located in Section 20, Lot 1048 and there are have been 10 family interred there. They are mom, ( Margaret Mary Wesling Brennan), along with my brother (Matthew James Brennan), her parents (John J. Wesling and Margaret Frances  Maher Wesling), her unnamed brother (Baby Wesling) her mother’s brother & sister , (John A. Maher & Catherine [Kate] Maher), her grandfather (John Maher), and her great grandmother (Mary Maher).  There is also a Josephine Maher buried there in 1921, who I believe is an aunt.   For the record, John Joseph Bertram Brennan and Timothy Patrick Aloysius Brennan are interred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Currently there is no grave marker at the Maher, Wesling, Brennan lot. Until one is placed, it can be located by finding the Murphy-Reilly monument (lot 1339). Maher, Wesling Brennan lot 1048 is directly behind this lot. There are several smaller grave markers for the Beatty family (lot 1033). Lot 1048 is immediately to the right of the Beatty family. This portion of section 20 is adjacent to West Florissant Avenue at Alcott Ave. Look for the street signs on the light-post. It is a short walk from this location on West Florissant to Grandma and Grandpa's old house on Davison Ave.

Ronald Brummelhorst (Uncle Ronny) first husband of Ellen Brummelhorst Dwyer (nee Brennan) and father of Daniel Dwyer, James Dwyer, and Michael Dwyer.

Section 17A appears as a flat, open field as the grave markers are all "ground level". The Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine is in the center of the section.Uncle Ronny's grave is located fairly near the roadside, perhaps 10 to 20 feet. Looking from the street, there is a mulched bed where there is a section 17A marker. Gravesite is just beyond this spot in the direction of the three trees, see photo (taken 11/16/2017).

The plot card indicates 4 different owners of this shared lot including Aunt Ellen. I asked her if she knows the other people who are interred here. She does not.

Anastasia Brennan (nee Whyte) and Thomas L Brennan, paternal grandparents of TGB Sr.

Katie Margaret Brennan (there is a good Irish name!), daughter of Anastasia and Thomas L Brennan, aunt of TGB Sr.

note: I have no info on Hughes of Duff families.

Sarah Brennan (nee Sreenan) and Edward Brennan (Union Army veteran) , parents of James Brennan, and paternal grandparents of MAB.

Bessie Brennan, daughter of Sarah and Edward Brennan, aunt of MAB.
Walter Brennan, son of Sarah and Edward Brennan, uncle of MAB.

Loretta Hagerty (nee Yengst), daughter of Alice Brennan Murphy Yengst and Thomas Murphy, step-daughter (possibly adopted daughter) of Louis Yengst. Cousin and childhood companion of MAB.

Thomas Murphy, first husband of Alice Brennan, son-in-law of Sarah and Edward Brennan,

Note: I have no other documentation on infants Edward, Catherine, and Stephen Brennan. They could be children and/or grandchildren of Edward and Sarah.

Note: on my first visit to this site, I found the small obelisk, which was likely the original grave marker. It is now gone and was replaced by the new and larger gravestone (see photos). I do not know who had the new marker installed. The adjacent "Mother" stone remains in place.

Nellie McCarthy, daughter of Catherine McCarthy (nee Hayes) and Dennis McCarthy, sister of Margaret Elizabeth Brennan (nee McCarthy), and aunt of MAB.

Kate Yengst (nee McCarthy), daughter of Catherine McCarthy (nee Hayes) and Dennis McCarthy, sister of Margaret Elizabeth Brennan (nee McCarthy), and aunt of MAB. First wife of Louis Yengst.

William Brennan, son of Sarah Brennan (nee Sreenan) and Edward Brennan, brother of James Brennan, and uncle of MAB.

Alice Yengst (nee Brennan), daughter of Sarah Brennan (nee Sreenan) and Edward Brennan, sister of James Brennan, and aunt of MAB. Wife of Thomas J Murphy and second wife of Louis Yengst.

Louis Yengst - married Kate McCarthy Yengst, married Alice Brennan Yengst.

Direct descendants of lot owner, Nellie McCarthy, have rights to use this lot. Up to 2 full caskets may be interred here.

Note: for those of us who are grandchildren of MAB and TGB Sr, Nellie McCarthy is our great grand aunt. While we are not "direct" descendants, I believe we would still have inheritance rights. However, I did not inquire about this at the Calvary office.

Direct descendants of lot owner, Dennis McCarthy, have rights to use this lot. Up to 4 full caskets may be interred here.

Note: this lot is on the side of a hill. If you go over the crest of the hill and down by the street, you can find the grave of playwright Tennessee Williams.

Robert J Brennan, the first grandchild of MAB and TGB Sr. The son of Bob and Gen Brennan, sadly, he lived for only about 3 weeks.
